ATOZ NOTE
Hyeopjae and Geumneung sit next to each other, but they feel slightly different.
Hyeopjae is generally more convenient if you want cafés, restaurants and other facilities nearby.
Geumneung may suit you better if you prefer a little more space, a wider sandy shore at low tide and a slower walk by the water.
Both beaches can be busy during summer afternoons. For a quieter visit, arrive early or return when the sunlight begins to soften.

The two beaches are close enough to visit together, but each works better for a slightly different kind of day.

GEUMNEUNG BEACH
- Directly connected to the same stretch of coastline
- Often feels more relaxed than neighboring Hyeopjae
- A wider sandy shore and shallow natural pools appear around low tide
- Well suited to families spending time in shallow water and on the sand

WHEN TO GO
The beach changes
with the tide
Hyeopjae and Geumneung can look very different depending on the tide.
At lower tide, more sand and volcanic rock are exposed, making it easier to walk through shallow water and explore the shoreline.
At higher tide, the sea fills more of the bay and the water can look deeper and more expansive.
Always check the waves, wind and local safety controls before entering the water.
MORNING
- Usually a better choice for avoiding the heaviest crowds
- Easier to visit before the summer heat becomes intense
MIDDAY
- Often the clearest time for bright blue water
- Expect stronger sun, limited shade and more visitors
LATE AFTERNOON
- Softer light and sunset views toward Biyangdo Island

WITHOUT A CAR
Visiting without a car
Hyeopjae and Geumneung are on Jeju’s west coast, so reaching them from Jeju City or the airport takes time.
Check both the walking distance from the bus stop and the return schedule before starting your trip.
Bus routes and travel times can change, so use a live Korean map service on the day of travel.
Google Maps is useful for locating the beaches, but Korean map services may provide more detailed local transit information.
