300kg Tuna

삼백참치

My favorite plate to have with a drink in Jeju.

In Jeju, black pork and cutlassfish usually dominate the conversation.

My own favorite plate is something else.

300kg Tuna in Yeondong.

It is where I return when I want properly aged bluefin tuna belly.

STORY / 300KG

A Name That Began with 300kg

300kg Tuna began in 2021 in old Jeju City under its original name, 300kg Tuna.

According to the restaurant, the name came from its preference for large bluefin tuna around the 300-kilogram mark.

Today in Yeondong, the focus remains on aged bluefin tuna, especially its prized belly cuts.

Rather than stretching the menu too far, the restaurant concentrates on the texture, richness and umami that develop through aging.

TUNA

Aged Bluefin Tuna, Especially the Belly

What I come back for is the aged bluefin tuna belly.

It is not simply about richness.

The aging brings out deeper umami, while each belly cut carries a different balance of fat, texture and softness.

Part of the pleasure is taking time to compare those differences across a single plate.

ATOZ PICK

Aged Bluefin Tuna Belly

If I had to choose one thing for a first visit to 300kg Tuna, this would be it.

The soft fat, the texture between the layers, and the savory depth left by the aging process are the main reasons I keep coming back.

TAKEOUT

A Night Made Better by Takeout

I like the takeout here just as much.

The tuna is arranged carefully, the accompaniments are packed neatly, and the whole set feels considered.

It works especially well for a quiet drink back at a hotel or home.

More importantly, the tuna still tastes like the reason I wanted to order from 300kg Tuna in the first place.

On evenings in Jeju when I do not want another meal out, this is one of the first things that comes to mind.

SPACE

Not Quite the Tuna Restaurant You Expect

Tableware arranged on a warm wooden table at 300kg Tuna

The room feels different from the typical image of a tuna restaurant.

Dark wood, older furniture and warm lighting give the space the mood of a small bar or an old-fashioned restaurant.

It is the kind of place that suits a slow plate of tuna and a drink beside it.
