A path through silver grass toward the sea of western Jeju from Geum Oreum

What catches the eye first at Geum Oreum is not the summit, but what lies inside it.

A broad crater sinks into the center, with Wangmae changing its appearance with the season and rainfall.

Walk a little farther along the rim and the landscape opens in both directions: Hallasan on one side, and the sea and fields of western Jeju on the other.

01

When the Crater Appears

Reaching the upper ridge, the center of the oreum suddenly opens below.

The landscape inside Geum Oreum feels quite different from the shape seen from outside.

Grass and silver grass follow the rounded crater walls, with Wangmae resting at the bottom.

02

Wangmae, Inside Geum Oreum

The crater floor inside Geum Oreum is known as Wangmae.

Water does not remain here throughout the year.

After periods of rain, water may collect across part of the crater floor, but its size and appearance change with rainfall and the season.

On other days, much of the ground may be exposed. That changing landscape makes each visit to Geum Oreum look slightly different.

03

A Ridge Covered in Silver Grass

In autumn, the silver grass can become as memorable as the crater itself.

Each gust of wind moves the ridge in one direction, while the pale stems turn almost silver under the sunlight.

It is a good stretch to walk slowly, looking from the crater inside to the wider landscape beyond the rim.

04

Western Jeju from Above

Turn toward the outer ridge and the fields of western Jeju, Geumak Village and the distant sea come into the same view.

On a clear day, the coastline and small offshore islands become easier to pick out in the distance.

Geum Oreum feels less like climbing a high mountain and more like finding a wide viewpoint over Jeju.

05

A Scene Made by the Wind

On the day I visited, paragliders kept moving across the sky above Geum Oreum.

They drifted between the clouds and over the fields and oreums of western Jeju, adding a completely different movement to the landscape below.

06

Looking Toward Hallasan

Turn away from the sea and Hallasan sits farther inland.

The crater, silver grass, small villages and fields lead the eye toward the mountain in the distance.

Seeing so many layers of Jeju from a single ridge is part of the appeal of Geum Oreum.

07

The Way Down

The landscape continues even after leaving the crater ridge.

Silver grass lines the path, while smaller oreums reappear from angles that were easy to miss on the way up.

Geum Oreum is better experienced as the whole walk, not simply as a summit to reach and leave.
